Import Text highlights, is there a fix?

Oct 22, 2014

Hi,

I've am working on translating a module into a good number of different languages, but I've come across a weird bug from the get go.

When I import the translated text, it's fine, until I adjust text boxes or objects to allow for the new text lengths. Then, text starts highlighting when moused-over, including text inside buttons, and in some cases a white square appears instead of a highlight.

I've checked the import .doc, I've re-imported, started fresh, but all I've been able to do is recreate the issue.

Has anyone come across this before, and is there a fix for it?

Thanks!

Karla

Hi Karla,

Can you also confirm you're working with local project files as described here?

Also, I know you mentioned pasting from somewhere else - did you try Notepad as Becky mentioned in that other thread? Also, have you tried removing all formatting elements while editing the text box? I've seen it before where it looks like the item is hyperlinked, and "unlinking" it cause the highlight to go away - even though you may not have added it in originally.

Lastly, as Wendy said - if you could share a copy of the .story file here with us we're happy to take a look at it.

Hi Wendy,

If you could take a look that would be grand. Due to confidentiality I can't upload the whole thing, I've reduced it to two slides that demonstrate the issues I've had.

Some of the text highlights in lilac, the navigation buttons highlight in a lighter grey, the text on the second slide changes the mouse cursor to look like a link, and the red circle text highlights completely in white, obscuring what is written.

Hi Karla,

Thanks for sharing the file here. When I took a look - I saw the highlighting behavior you mentioned, but when I would select the text and choose "remove hyperlink" the highlighting would disappear - and this is what I was referring to before. Depending on where the text came from or the formatting, that element seems to be applied and you'll notice if you look at any of the text that doesn't highlight, if you do the same thing the only option you see is the "edit hyperlink" as there isn't anything else there.

Now, I was able to do that on everything except the first slide on the red button. I'm not able to select that text? Did you bring that in as an image from somewhere else or was it created in Storyline?

You'll also want to confirm you're working with local project files as mentioned here.

Wow everything looks different today! I like it.

Hi Ashley,

I sent a ticket to support and they came back to me with the same solution. I'm really glad you noticed it, because I didn't and was really worried I'd have to re-write all my work from scratch!

The red button is custom with different states, editing the state would allow you to edit the text.

I've always worked with local project files, so there's nothing to worry about there! :)

I'd like to update this thread as well now that I've been removing these mystery hyperlinks - in some cases the text box would not appear to have a removeable hyperlink, but still produce the issue. I found that typing an extra character in the text box, such as a full stop, and then right clicking at the end of the text in the box would allow me to remove the hyperlink. Then I could delete the full stop and carry on as normal.

Thank you very much for your help! I really appreciate it <3

Brand new world here in the forums. :-)  Happy to hear you like it, as we're pretty excited.

I'm glad we were able to help fix up your file. A few of them didn't show the "remove hyperlink" when I first selected, but I could still see the hand hovering - so then I did it a little bit at a time and it worked. Glad to hear you're working locally, and the other piece you may want to check into is if you're copying/pasting text from another application that may have formatting applied to it.  If you need to copy and paste text, it's generally best to copy out of Notepad or something similar that doesn't have formatting applied.

Ahh, a button with states! I didn't even think to check that. Sorry! :-)

Wendy - just want to say thank you again for your help.

Yes, I use 360 here too, but if you dont have a hyperlink in your text, you dont get the menu you showed - you get a stripped down version without the hyperlink options.

I didnt realise this until you showed me your screenshot, and I saw that you had manually typed in a hyperlink.

This led me to an epiphany! In the text field that was causing issues, I manually typed in at the end of it www.google.com

Previewing it, Storyline saw the url and made it into a hyperlink, which now gives me the menu you showed me.

And finally, I was able to select my google.com url, and select REMOVE HYPERLINK.

This has removed the stupid lilac highlight box that Ive been trying to do!

I know all that sounds complicated, and Im not explaining it very well, but basically, without you showing me that menu and the bit of manual hyperlink text you had entered, I wouldnt have thought of manually entering my own so that I could then "remove" it.

Thank you!
