iPad, HTML5 and Triggers based upon variables

Aug 20, 2014

Hello,

I have a custom next button that lives on a layer. I have a variable 'visited' that adds +1 every time the user makes an interaction on the slide. Once the user clicks through several interactions, the layer with my next button opens. I've done this method countless times for so many projects but the next button layer isn't being triggered to open. The variable is adding however. Is this a limitation with mobile Safari?

Hi Joseph,

It may be something we'd need to see how it's set up and behaving, but it doesn't sound like the known limitations of the HTML5 output in mobile safari as detailed in this comparison chart. What iPad and iOS are you using? Have you tested the HTML5 content on your desktop using a browser such as Chrome to see if it's consistent there as well (you can point to the story_html5.html)?

If you'd like to share the .story file here with us using the paper clip icon we can take a look at it. The forums have around a 20 mb upload limit, so you may want to strip it down to just that slide with the layer and one slide after that.

Hey Ashley!

You guys are great with answering questions. Fortunately, I figured out my problem on my own but I have new questions. Both of these still revolve around the same issue I was having before.

  • I have next and back buttons on each slide that are positioned along the left and right sides of the slides. I have a .mov output from Flash that runs along the entire width of the slide underneath my next and back buttons. On the iPad HTML5 output, I am unable to press the back and next buttons even though they are above the video. Is there anything I can do other than resize the video?
  • So Triggers based upon variables wasn't the issue and I apologize. The issue was I have images that share the same space as my next button and the next button layer activates on top of every other layer and appears after clicking enough interactions. Even though my nextButton layer is the topmost layer in Storyline, in the HTML5 output on iPad, my next button is appearing below my images.

Overall, I'm trying to understand the logic of how layers stack in HTML5 iPad output.

Hi Joseph,

Glad you were able to figure out the first problem!

For these buttons, are they on the slide itself, slide master or on a layer? You could look at resizing the video - but what about setting the buttons up on an actual layer since that will appear on top of your base layer?

In regards to the next button with the layers - I think that's also something I'd want to see how you have it set up and do some testing. Are you able to share here - or even create a sample/mock up .story file with your same design and triggers?

I will give this a shot.

Yes, would you send me the link to your file upload area?

Thank you!

Hi Joseph,

Sure thing - you can send your .story file along to us here. To have the file be assigned to me specifically, please put the following in the case description at the beginning:

This way the file will come to me instead of heading to our support engineers - and if I have any questions or difficulty while looking at it, I'll be able to escalate to them for additional review. If you don't include it though - no worries, they'll be happy to help you directly as well!
