Is there a way to drag objects out of a scrolling panel?

Feb 19, 2024

I feel like this is more difficult than it should be.  I should be able to click on the object name in the timeline and drag it up above the scrolling panel. Or right click the object and arrange it above the panel. But no matter what I do, objects get trapped and if by some random chance I do get it out of the scrolling panel I dare not touch it because the slightest nudge will trap it and lock it away forever to be scrolled when it should be static.

This is frustrating.

I just tested that, and here's what I found:

  • When I dragged an object only part way out of the scrolling panel and released the mouse, the object stayed within the panel. This was obvious as I was dragging the object, because it slowly disappeared as it went beyond the boundaries of the panel.
  • When I dragged the object to an area outside the panel and then released the mouse, the object was removed from the panel.

To remove an object from the panel without worrying about when you release the mouse, I suggest you do this:

  • Cut (command-X) the item from the scrolling panel.
  • Paste (command-V) the item. When pasted, it will not be within the panel.

If you're concerned about accidentally putting it back into the panel, use the eye-icon in the Timeline to temporarily hide the scrolling panel while you position the object. Or use the lock-icon in the Timeline. That will prevent any editing to the panel while locking is "on."
