Issue with self-made buttons

Jun 09, 2021

It seems that whenever I create my own buttons in Storyline 360(shapes using triggers and usually creating a hover state), they malfunction.

For instance, in my current project, I have it set up so that a button will show a different layer. That layer has hidden all base layer content, but the button that the user selects to navigate there still shows up for some reason, and will not disappear - even if I set up a trigger to make it so.

I had to move the content from the new layer onto an entirely new slide. This isn't the end of the world for my current project, which will be small. But some of my more complex projects require multiple slides with multiple layers to keep it organized.

Another one of my .story's is having this issue. It's attached. The issue is on slide 1.9 Check NSF. In preview to get to the slide in question, you must go through the following selections:

Select "Yes" --> "Check" -->  "Check NSF" --> "Submit to 1st Otto-mation"

The other buttons probably are having the same issue, but since there's other items on the layers that cover them, you wouldn't be able to tell unless you deleted the layer options. Feel free to test that out.

PS This time I inserted SL Buttons and didn't just use shapes to create the button and it's still having this issue.

Hello Buffy, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thank you for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing and sharing your project file to look at.

We do have an issue reported to our team where an object from base layer still appears on the slide layer when restoring the previous state when the user hovers out is enabled.

Deleting the hover triggers on slide 1.9 will stop the issue from happening:

The hover state of an object is built into the activity, and a trigger is not typically needed. Can you explain the behavior that you would like to see specific to this trigger so that I can recommend a workaround?

Looks like I actually already had changed it from a button to a shape object - so no "hover" state was built in. Hence the trigger is required.

Behavior I'm looking to accomplish:

1. Changes state when user hovers over the button on the base slide

2. Clicking the button will show the correct layer and the button on the base slide will not appear (as I have hidden all base layer objects from other slide layers).

Hi, Buffy!

Thank you for describing what you're looking to accomplish!

As a workaround, can you add a white rectangle to the bottom of your layers? I tried it on slide 1.9, and it seems to work. I'm attaching the edited .story file if you'd like to take a look.

Let me know if this works!
