Keeping a running score between learner and "bad guy"

Dec 06, 2012

I'm planning out a scenario-based course using Storyline with a series of "what would you do" types of questions.

If the user answers correctly, it adds points to their score. If they get it wrong, the "bad guy" gets points added to his score.

I want the score totals to always be visible throughout the course, to make it feel more competitive (knowing that will probably make the user more engaged in thinking before answering the questions.

I'm fairly new to Storyline, and can't seem to figure out what i need to do to make my idea happen. I've tried searching through older posts, but can't find any posts about this.

Any ideas?

your game sounds fun Lori. I did something a little bit like this not too long ago. In addition to what Bill mentioned, here are a couyple things i learned.

  • If you insert a result slide in your course, SToryline makes a varaible for you called Result.Score.Points. You can use that to show a tally during your quiz questions (that way you don't have to make your own variable and triggers to keep track of the score, so this could save you a bit of time.) Also if you don't like the result slide format, you can change it to look however you want, you don't need to use the default look.
  • For the bad guy score, you would need to make your own variable for that, and use a trigger to add points to that tally whenever the user gets a question wrong. in my project, i put the trigger on the INCORRECT FEEDBACK layer of each question.

i am attaching a sample with 3 questions so you can see what i mean.

That's a nice solution, Saenna! It's a good idea to place the trigger for incrementing the "bad guy score" on the Incorrect Feedback layers. Clever! Also Lori, one more thought: if you go with Saenna's approach, and you place the variable references on the slide to show the running score, you could save a little bit of time by putting that info on the slide master that is used for your quiz questions... that way you don't have to copy/paste to each question. You can get to the slide masters by clicking View > Slide Master.

Good luck & let us know how your project turns out!

Thank you Saenna! And thank you for taking the time to create a sample for me. That was very generous of you!

Jeanette, thanks for the tip! I learned about using Masters and how time-saving they are in a StoryLine course last month, and was hoping I'd be able to save time using that functionality. This is all great news this morning!

Thank you all!
