Learner passes, but storyline tells learner they failed!

Jun 09, 2015

Hi,  here's the situation.  I've seen similar posts but now can't find them - anyway, no resolution was shown.  Any help is appreciated!

Learner takes test (quiz bank) and fails.  "You did not pass" is displayed along with score.  Learner tries again.  Passes, but gets same "you did not pass" message along with the big red X.  However, passing score is displayed.  Seems that wrong layer is displaying.  Passing score = 90. Learner can score 100 on second try and still fail.

I reproduced the same error several times in our LMS (occurrence is inconsistent - sometimes things work beautifully) and then moved on beyond the results slide.  I then decided to look back a few slides to the results slide and guess what?  When I moved back 2-3 slides to the results slide using the previous button, the results showed the correct layer with passing message!

I've tested in SCORM Cloud and the error happens there inconsistently as well.  Mainfest "looks great" according to SCORM Cloud.  I can't seem to detect a pattern that produces the error either in LMS or SCORM cloud.   I've attached a copy of the error from a learner who experienced it.  She'd taken the quiz once, failed, and then passed on round 2.

Does anyone have experience with this issue or any thoughts/resolutions to offer?  This is our first large scale rollout of a Storyline course and I really want learners to have a good experience.    The quiz is in the "wrapping it up" section.  Thanks for any help!

Hi Wendy, thanks for your reply. After thinking about it, I didn't upload the file as I needed to check with our IT group first.  Sorry, I thought I'd updated my post but I realize I had missed a statement or two.  I appreciate your reply,   I hope to be able to upload tomorrow.

I have posted a picture of the error as an FYI.  Any thoughts about troubleshooting or resolution, or any experience with this problem?

Without looking at the way you've built it, I can only guess that it's how your variables for pass/fail are set up.  If you use a variable to track "fail" on the first attempt and don't reset that variable, then it might still be up to show "fail" regardless of the second score.

Try checking how your Pass/Fail variables are working is the first point of troubleshooting I'd run with.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for you reply. That was one of my first thoughts so I did check it. It seems to me that if it was a variable issue it would consistently display the wrong message on the 2nd attempt "pass" but it doesn't. In fact, when I fail on first attempt and hit retry, I see the score reset to zero before it returns me to question 1.

The odd thing is that going through the same fail then pass sequence, everything works right most of the time - it's only on an occasional basis that it's hosed up. So far no pattern recognized that produces the error. Any other thoughts?

Hi, JoElla -- If you are not permitted to post your true file, perhaps you could put together a sample that does not contain sensitive information and share it here so the community can take a look. Or, if that is not possible, you are welcome to share your file with staff privately using this link and we will be happy to take a look.

Thanks, I did create a watered down version with all of the "meat" removed but still needed to get an OK. However, I will upload that version privately so that I can move forward. Thank you.

Hi, Calvin -- I checked JoElla's case, and it appears that the last correspondence from our Support engineer was as follows: "Intermittent behavior is difficult to investigate and the Retry button is something sensible we can look at if we have a consistently reproducible set of steps."

If you have a file of your own that you would like to have tested, you are welcome to share it and we'll be happy to check it out. If you'd like to share privately, here is the form you would need to do so. :)
