Limiting clicks in Test mode

Jul 16, 2014

Hi all, I'm new to Articulate (but used Captivate since 2006), and I'm trying to create a Test mode where the user actually goes through and clicks on the options. Is there a way to limit the attempts of incorrect clicks before maybe getting a caption that tells them, again, what to click on?

Also, is there a way to record for any mode without also recording screencasts?

Thanks!!

Hi, welcome to the forums.

First part:
Yes, you can track clicks.

Laying it out:

  • Decide which objects actually count when clicked on.
  • If clicking *anywhere* counts as a click, you may want to go Insert -> Hotspot. On the timeline, put this hotspot below all your interactive things (buttons, etc.) but above all non-interactive objects (static text, etc.)

Counting Triggers:

Create variable "Counter" (type: Number; Default: 0)

Every clickable object (that counts) needs a trigger that looks something like this:

Adjust Variable

Counter

+Add

Value 1

When User Clicks [object]

Activating the error when the clock runs out:

You'll probably want a couple triggers here. You can make them do whatever you want (make an object appear, make a layer appear, reset the Counter variable to 0, etc.).

The key is the second half of these triggers:

...

...

When: Variable Changes

Variable: Counter

(Show Conditions)

If Counter == [insert number of attempts they get]

I hope that helps you get started.

I'm not following your second question. What are you trying to record?

Thank you for the replies!!

And by the screencasts, I guess I mean what's being recorded on the screen besides the mouse actions and the window or area I'm capturing. For example, if I'm demonstrating to click on a certain button, and when my mouse accidentally hovers over something that has a tooltip, that tooltip will quickly blip up on the screen, and I don't want to see things like that. I just want to see the smooth mouse movements and mouse clicks on the areas I want to demonstrate, and have the screen background stay. I've tried hiding the animations, but then sometimes the background goes white and it looks like the mouse is clicking on nothing.

I hope this makes sense!! Thanks so much for all your help. :P
