Line motion path
Nov 14, 2023
Hi all
Using this tutorial https://www.thearticulatetrainer.com/is-there-a-way-to-make-a-scrolling-panel-automatically-scroll/#comment-44814 I built (using Storyline 360) a scroll panel which gives the text/content the appearance of cinema screen which plays automatically using line motion paths.
However, I want to allow the user to be able to replay the animation on demand if desired. To try and achieve this I inserted a button with the following trigger setting; 'move object (text) along path (line motion path 1) when animation completes object (text) on animation (line path 1), conditions 'if the state of button 1 =selected.'
My issue is; when I test it the button changes to selected state but the animation doesn't restart/loop as expected.
Any ideas or help would be very greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Julie

Without seeing the file, here are a few thoughts:
Hi Tom
Thank you for your quick response I have tried what you suggested, no luck. I also tried triggering with a variable that also failed. I have published the single slide to Review, and it is not working there either. I have included the link with Beta cloud backup https://360.articulate.com/review/content/6c5e533a-4a5e-4a7d-a9ae-7c47c0aa0f5f/review if you have time to have a look, I would be grateful. If I should be generating or sending the file via another method, please let me know.
Many thanks
Julie
Hey Julie,
Thanks for sharing this link. I also received your email through the BLOG, and have responded there as well. I did not see the source file attached to that Review Link.
However, based on what I see in Review, you may need your Replay button to have 2 triggers, in this order.
Once I get the file in hand, I would be glad to take a closer look.
Here's a demo I built with the scroll restart.

Here's how the triggers are set.
Hi Tom
Thank you for sending this info that is exactly what I am wanting to achieve but for some reason I cannot fathom it is not working.
I have set my triggers exactly as you have, I have tried moving everything onto a new slide, I have tried removing the scroll panel, but nothing makes a difference it still is not enabling the replay option that I am wanting and I have no idea why
This is the Review link I have published it to allow upload of project file to Review 360 . https://360.articulate.com/review/content/6c5e533a-4a5e-4a7d-a9ae-7c47c0aa0f5f/review
If you have time to help me further I would greatly appreciate it
Kind regards
Julie Taylor
The upload project file is only good for you. You can upload it here using the add attachment in the bottom left corner of the text box when you reply.

Thanks Tom - I assume I would need to attach the published project output file? If you can advise on where it might be located that would be great! Unfortunately, I'm unable to locate it, I checked the 'Documents/My Articulate Projects folder' and also ran multiple searches on my computer without any result.
You need to attache the .story file so we can see the triggers. For the attachment, make a copy of the file and delete all of the slides except the one you're showing us.
Hi Julie! 👋
I wanted to pop in and clarify a few things for you!
You are only able to send project backups to folks that are on your team. Since Ron is outside of your subscription, he won't have access to your file. As Tom mentioned earlier, you can upload your .story file to this thread if you are able to gather it from your computer.
In the meantime, I've gone ahead and opened a support case on your behalf. That way, we can help you pinpoint those files for you!
One of our talented Support Engineers will be in touch shortly via email! I've looped the team in on this discussion you've been having with Ron and Tom.
Thanks for your patience! We'll continue the conversation over in your support case!
Hello,
Thank you for your ongoing assistance with this, apologies for not providing the file sooner but I have been out of the office the past three days.
I have made the file and attached it with only the relevant slide included. As you will see pretty much everything works as expected except for the line motion path actually restarting when triggered. Thank you I hope I have attached the file correctly.
Thanks so much
Julie

Hey Julie,
Thanks for sharing your file. Great job on getting as far as you did. There were a couple of things that were preventing this from working as expected. I have recorded a quick PEEK to share my findings and also attached a repaired version I created. Thanks again for sharing.
Here is the PEEK - https://360.articulate.com/review/content/4170934e-a5f6-46e3-9273-ce7dc7a5681e/review
Hi Ron
Thank you very much for taking the time to prepare the Peek response, 😊 I have followed your advice, and it is working as expected, thank you so much!
Just as an fyi the gif and image at the beginning of the scrolling panel content were added after the build. I did this because Storyline added a long delay at the beginning of the scrolling panel prior to showing the text box content and I could not work out why it happened or how to shorten it. As a workaround I added those elements to fill in the time gap. Which I will leave now in because I think they add some interest and engagement. However, moving forward it would be good to know what I did wrong to create such a long lead in and how to shorten that.
Again, many thanks for your awesome support and patience with assisting me.
Wishing you a wonderful day,
Julie
Hey Julie,
That delay is normally the EASING, but you had removed that in your file. You had created a motion and reversed the direction, so that might have been part of the issue, since in reality the animation starts pretty far off the slide. For example, the length of your animation is 1289 pixels, in the repaired version path is only 750 pixels.
Glad the file is working as expected.
Thanks again Ron for your assistance, that kind of makes sense and I am sure if I implement this technique a few more times I will better understand its nuances.
cheers Julie :)
