Loading issues when using a low-bandwith connection to view a desktop capture based course

Feb 23, 2015

Hi,

I'm currently working on courses that contains a lot of desktop captures, I use a small screen resolution (1366 by 768 ) when I record to reduce the size of the videos. I used the automatic split to explain every single action in a separate slide and I make sure to compress the video and audio as much as possible by dragging the quality sliders all the way down in the publishing menu (as a reference point, the latest course I worked on is about 40MB).

When viewing the contents locally, everything runs smoothly and I'm satisfied with the results and the overall quality, however I get really sluggish results when the courses are running on a file server and I'm using a low bandwidth connection to access them.
The loading spinning wheel keeps appearing briefly between each slides and it gets really annoying as each slide consists in very short videos varying from 2 to 10 seconds.

My learners are constantly on the go and most of the time they use femtocells and low bandwidth wireless access points to view contents on their laptops.

Is there anything I can do to make my courses lighter (other than reducing the publishing quality) and to generally improve load times ?

Could the fact that my courses are hosted on a file server rather than on a web server have an impact on the load times ? I am not using a LMS by the way.

Thank you for helping me.
