Local link to Resources folder?

Jun 04, 2013

Hi, Anyone know what the url linkage should look like to access the Resourse's files that are embedded into the Storyline file. For example, I have embedded a PDF file within the Resources tab and want to have a btn on-screen which will also link to this file. I know the file is there in the outputted structure folder "external_files"... but I cannot seem to link to it, e.g -" ./external_files/name of pdf file "

Hi Paul!

Storyline allows you to add files and web addresses to the Resources tab in your player. If you attach a file resource to your course, you can also link to that same file from any slide in your story.

Here's how:

  1. If you haven't already done so, add the file to the Resources tab in your player.
  2. Then navigate to the slide where you want to link to the file attachment, and select the text or object that you want to be hyperlinked.
  3. Go to the Insert tab, and click Hyperlink.
  4. When the Trigger Wizard launches, select Jump to URL/File from the Action drop-down list.
  5. In the File field, type the following text (but replace MyFile.xlsx with the name of your file, including the appropriate file extension):
    story_content/external_files/MyFile.xlsx
  6. Select the event that you want to execute this trigger from the When drop-down list, such as "User clicks". Here's an example of a completed trigger:

I hope this helps!

Hi Inka and welcome to Heroes!

Christine has taken another position within Articulate, so she doesn't get back into the forums as often. Did you load the first project into your LMS as well? Could you tell us a bit more about any differences between the first project where this was successful and the project you have now? The method Christine shared is still the method we would suggest using. If you're able to share your .story file here we can test it out as well. If you'd prefer not to share in the forums, you're welcome to share it privately here.

Thanks for getting back to me Ashley. Yes, I uploaded both projects onto our LMS. They are not different really apart from the first one being a lot bigger and including more videos. I am probably just doing something obvious wrong. :-(

I don't seem to be able to upload the faulty one here. I will try the other link.

Thanks again, your help is much appreciated.

Hello Ashley, I was not able to upload my file here or in the Support case section. I have now sorted it though. I didn't realise that I had to have the resources tab selected somewhere in the project. I didn't really want that as I didn't want to use the Resources tab but wanted to use the button with the link to the document. I have now created a separate (unused) scene with the Resources tab selected and it all works
