Looking for ideas to score non-quiz slides in Storyline 3

May 16, 2018

Has anyone tackled how to score non-quizzes in Storyline?

For years I've produced a final exam for our certification programs, where I pull a random question draw from all 80 quiz slides. No problem.

What's new this year is that I want to add in what I call "virtual labs", which consist of a landing page that explains the exercise, then a jump to a scene that has the lab -- a series of hotspot questions over video -- that return to the next slide when finished.

The challenge is:

- How do I collect a score for each lab?

- How do I bring that total back into the running total for the entire exam?

- How can I randomize the labs, which now rely on hardcoding to take them to the next slide upon completion?

I have some ideas about how to set up hotspot coding, but I'm not sure how to work the running totals for the score. There are 40 labs, so it's a challenge!

Please through your suggestions at me! If you've solved a similar problem, I'd love to hear about your solution. Thanks so much!

Hi Marie,

It sounds like this is quite an undertaking! I'm happy to help answer your questions.

  • How do I collect a score for each lab? Learners will earn 10 points for a correct answer on a Freeform Hotspot question slide. It sounds like each lab will require multiple hotspot question slides, so I would add a results slide at the end of each lab to tally all of the points and calculate a score.
  • How do I bring that total back into the running total for the entire exam? Since you'll have multiple results slide in this exam, you'll want to include a final results slide to combine the scores of all the other results slides in the course.
  • How can I randomize the labs, which now rely on hardcoding to take them to the next slide upon completion? Normally you would use Question Banks to randomize quiz questions, but you won't be able to use a bank in this case because one lab consists of multiple slides. I don't know of a way you can randomize groups of slides, but maybe the community will have some ideas for you!

Hi, Alyssa!

Thanks so much for your reply. I have figured out the linking and randomizing of questions. So the exam is working!

What I haven't done is added individual scoring for labs. I'll follow your links above, and see if I can come up with something creative. There are over 200 slides to touch, so I will be looking for some kind of "easy program" solution.

Thanks again for sharing the links!
