Lost files_ Is there a safety net?

Sep 24, 2017

Hi

I seem to have lost 2 days worth of work and cannot work how this has happened!  I saved throughout the build, as per usual, but today I cannot locate the most current version on either my hard drive or the system backup of my company.

I was working via a VPN...not sure if that has anything to do with it; however, one would think that throughout saving this work, it would appear on my hard drive or the software list of files????

I am not sure whether this is able to be recovered so I was just wondering if there was any sort of backup; other than what my company provides?

Hi Kerry,

I'm sorry to hear about your missing files - that's never a good feeling.

Working through a VPN could be a part of the cause, as we always recommend working on a local installation of Storyline and saving/editing/creating files that are on your local drive. If you need to back them up to a server or network, that's totally okay as long as you do so after saving and closing out the .story file. You'll see this mentioned in our best practices article here.

Although file corruption is irreversible,  there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Let us know if you need anything else!
