Moving objects on sceeen
Jul 02, 2013
Hi all,
I am a novice user. I thought I was getting the hang of things but I can't for the life of me work out how to achieve the following:
I have a page with definitions of new concepts. There are a bunch of words (text boxes) with their definitions underneath (in separate text boxes).
I have a sentence (in a text box) at the bottom of the page, with spaces for the words to go in.
I want learners to press a button, and have the words move across the screen into their positions into the complete sentences at the bottom, so that learners understand how to use them in a sentence.
I have tried using states, but I can only get them to 'appear' in the new position, as opposed to 'move' to the new position. Changing the animations makes no difference.
This seems like obvious functionality for an e-learning programme - am I missing something or is it just not possible?
Thanks,
Lee

Hi there Lee,
Love the idea! I'm not sure if you could do something like this using states, but if you just want the words to "flow" into position, you could probably do this with some entrance animations and a new layer/slide.
For example, you could have all of the content on the main slide, have the slide jump to a new slide with the content in place or open a new layer. On that slide, or layer, you could apply entrance animations to the text you'd like to move into the spaces.
Here's a very quick example:
Moving Words Example for Lee
I know the example's not fancy, but hopefully this suggestion will get you a little closer to what you'd like to accomplish :)
I'm also sharing the file, just in case you'd like to check it out.
Good luck on the project!
Hi Christine,
Thanks for your help. That is pretty much what I want to do however I am looking to create a very high quality presentation, and i do think it looks a bit funny when the words snap to the middle first and then float down.
Are there any plans to enable one to use transition effects between states? This would enable moving objects on the screen, which I assumed when purchasing SL, would have been a fundamental feature and easily achievable!
Is there any other way to do this, other than exporting an animation from powerpoint as a movie file and then inserting it. I did try this - in desperation - yesterday however it was painful and clunky and disappointing :-(

Hi Lee!
Here's a past forum discussion that might be helpful to you: Trigger an Animation in Storyline. If you'd like, you can perhaps also Submit a Feature Request for this type of transition effect. =)
I would love to be able to download the story example above, but it seems something is wrong with the file. It will not let me download it, it takes me straight to an html page.
Hi Holly,
I'm still able to download the original file that I shared here - "Moving words". If you're having trouble doing so, try right-clicking on the file and choose "save link as..".
Hopefully that will do the trick! :) If not, please let me know and I'll see if I can find an alternative way to share the project with you or possibly make something similar to share.
Have a wonderful day!
Christine
Hi Christine! I tried right-clicking and it saved it as html not as a story file. I got the same result :(
Hi Holly,
Ok - no problem. I'll send you a private message in a moment.
Thanks!
Hi Holly! Have you tried this in a different browser perhaps? Sounds like your browser may be restricting your ability to download the file.
I have also seen reports where users could no longer access older files, so I'm re-attaching Christine's original file here as well.
