multiple motion paths with just two paging controls

I'm trying to move a zoomed in diagram in four directions (up, down, left, right) to reveal nodes. I only want to use two controls (a "forward" and a "back" button) to control the motion paths. I'm using relative motion paths.
When the user clicks the forward button the first time, the diagram moves to the right. Then I have a trigger to "show" an invisible shape on top of the same button when the first animation ends. Then another trigger when the user clicks that shape to move the diagram along the second motion path, etc. I want the "back button" to simply reverse the previous path.
Is there an easier way to do this?

Is this close to what you're talking about?
Thanks. This is close, but I'm also needing to move the graphic up and down. That makes it more complicated than simply moving it left and right with relative paths. I need to have one (appears that way to user) "forward" button trigger movement in one of four directions.
So only one button instead of one for each direction?
I made one that works in each direction, but it sounds like thats not quite what you're looking for? I included it as an attachment anywho though :P
Maybe you could use variables? I put together another project using variables to move the image left and right like what you described in the OP. Is that one closer to what you were thinking of? The .story file for this one is V2, and you can edit the variables to have the image move up or down as well, but I only built it for left and right so far.
This was very helpful, Jackson. Thank you.
Glad that Jackson was able to assist you here David, thanks for the update :)
