Multiple Response Questions

Mar 31, 2014

I have a couple of questions.

1. Is it possible to have more than 10 responses on a Pick One or Pick Many question?

2. Is it possible to modify the spacing between each response? I am working with a limited amount of space and the long responses cause scrolling and I may be able to eliminate that if I can reduce the spacing between each response.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris,

Using the built in question types 10 will be the total number of options for most, but the pick one or pick many allow for more options than that. I just added a shape and duplicated it a number of times - was at 28 possible choices and could keep going.

Depending on the question type, you can move around the answer boxes and change their formatting once you've set up the original question and answer slide.

Another question for you, now that I'm getting back into this.

I'm able to get more than 10 responses, but they tend to not "snap in" to the designated area like with the standard survey and pick one quiz questions. They show up at the top and I drag them where I need them. Consequently, the alignment and spacing is a bit of a challenge. Also, I will need to hide certain responses based on previous quiz question responses. Is it possible to neatly "auto-align"  and collapse (move responses up past hidden ones) the responses in some way?

Thanks again!

Hi Chris,

You may want to turn on the grid and guidelines to help you align the question  boxes and radio buttons - as there isn't an easy way to get them to "snap" to one another. In regards to the hidden questions or collapsing the menu, I don't know of a set up that would behave in such a way - but hopefully someone in the community may have an idea.

Thanks, Ashley!

One more related question... I am trying to get the whole bunch of responses to shuffle. I have the shuffle option set to "Answers" in the Pick One popup. The answers will not shuffle. Perhaps I am missing something. Other forum posts indicate you can shuffle freeform pick one items.

If it helps, I have the radio buttons contained within a scrolling panel on a freeform pick one slide.

Thanks again!

Thanks, Ashley.

I put them in the scrolling panel as that was the only way I could get them to show.

If you look at the attached file, I added a new freeform pick one slide (1.5). I copied each radio button from 1.4 over. When you preview slide 1.5, the buttons don't show. The odd thing is I dragged the buttons from 1.4 out of the scrolling window, and they show and shuffle.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the new file - what's really weird with this one, is that when I open it slide 1.5 doesn't show me that they exist at all in the timeline either - or in the question editor. That makes me feel like there is something happening with this file (I hate to use the word...but corruption). So what I'd want to check next is that you're following along with these guidelines:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

You could try importing it into a new project to resolve any issues, although once a file has become corrupt there aren't any guarantees.

Thanks again, Ashley for helping me get to the bottom of this.

Just to make sure I'm not going crazy. I attached a new story with a freeform pick one question. It is exhibiting the same behavior (slide 1.2). I closed it and re-opened it, and the pick one options are still in the designer, so hopefully you'll see them.

I'm using version "Update 5:1401.2415"

Thanks again!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing that powerpoint. I see a completely different file when I open the most recent .story document here titled "Untitled1.story" I've attached a powerpoint showing a few screens that I do see - none of which include any question types, let alone a freeform pick many. This file is not one I've seen before - does it look familiar to you?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Chris,

I definitely download a lot of files, but regularly clear my browsing/download hisotry and remove old files. "Untitled1.story" is how the file is listed in your post:

The new file you've shared showcases the behavior you've described but again I see nothing in the timeline for that slide and when I open up the "edit pick one" I can't even choose which one is correct. Importing it into a new Storyline file did not help either. Since it seems there is consistently unusual behavior in your Storyline files, I'd like for you to go through the repair of Storyline detailed here
