Multiple states in sequence

Jan 09, 2013

Hi

I want to include a flowchart in a slide that builds up level by level. To achieve this I have created four states. I can't figure out how to set up the triggers for the next button so that it cycles through the four states before advancing to the next slide. I've tried having five separate triggers and having five separate triggers each with a condition variable linked to the previous state. Neither approach worked. There is also no guidance that I could find on the sequence that storyline uses for triggers: does it go from top to bottom, or does each trigger event need to be linked to an individual set of initiating circumstances?

Hi Ian. Welcome to the community!

I'm having a little difficulty visualizing what you're trying to do with the states. Though, it sounds like using layers may actually be a more efficient way of showing the flowchart you're wanting to set up. Any way you can share your .story file so we can take a look at what you have so far?

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I've attached the slide I was having problems with. I've converted it to utilise layers as you suggest. However, even now when I click the next button all layers unveil themselves rather than just the next. Likewise, when I insert a trigger on next to jump to the next slide, none of the layers are unveiled.

Good morning Ian,

Thanks very much for the file. I took a look and made some changes that I think may work for you. I added a custom "Continue" button and removed the "Next" and "Previous" buttons from the player. I set up the button on all of the slides and added the triggers that will allow the user to move through each stage of the flow chart. These were easily copied and pasted, if you need to make more.

Now, I'm not sure the custom button will work for you. However, this is the simpler route and it may be something you'd prefer. Adding additional progress triggers to the player's built-in "Next" button can cause some issues, as you've seen and would take some additional work to get it to function properly. It would be better to have them all on different slides, if you were going to stick to that button. However, with a custom button you can ensure that it sticks to the design of your course and it's a little easier to set up

I hope this works for you. I'm attaching the modified file, if you'd like to take a look.
