narration & previous buttons in storyline 2

Jan 23, 2017

Hi everyone,

I have narration on my slides and I was wondering how to stop the narration if a user clicks the previous button and goes back to that original slide ?

Should I adjust slide properties, and amend " when revisiting" to " reset to initial state" or should it be "automatically decide" ?

Hi Altan -

Audio on a slide will stop automatically when the learner leaves the slide. Are you saying that the audio continues to play even after the user clicks Previous and goes back a slide? Or are you saying that when a user returns back to a slide, you do not want the audio on that slide to replay again?

Hi Chris

I created some slides, with a no. of different audio files, which get triggered when the user say clicks on a particular object. So when a user then decides to revisit that slide by clicking the previous slide, it plays all the audio files.

The slide properties is set to saved state when revisiting slide

Hi Altan,

Thanks for sharing the copy of your course here. I took a look and added in another slide so that I could go back and forth between them, and the intro audio file didn't replay - but when trying to get the other audio files to play I wasn't sure which was dropped correct since it's not a built in lesson type. Can you share an answer key with me here to make the testing process a bit easier?

Hi Altan. I think you can somewhat resolve your issue by changing the slide setting to Reset to Initial State.

However, with the way you have things set up, I would not be totally confident that everything would work properly on a consistent basis. For example, I could start dragging and dropping the 2nd interaction (and thus playing the associated media) while the audio was still playing for the first, which made for a slight overlap in the audio.

I think you would be better able to control the behavior of the slide if you use layers instead of using Play Media triggers with conditions. Something like this; put the main explanation audio and first drag and drop segment  ("Multiply") on the base layer. Put the second drag and drop interaction (high and low temps) with associated audio on the 2nd layer, which is shown after successfully doing the first part. Put the final interaction and audio on still another layer. This would separate out the functionality into more easily-managed discrete "packages" so to speak, in my opinion. You then wouldn't need all the variables, and you could be more certain that one piece is finished before the next piece can be played, and you could be more certain of how things will reset when the user returns back to the slide. With all the variables you are currently using, there could be a bit of uncertainty.

Even simpler still would be to split those three pieces over three slides, giving you even more discrete control. I tend to design simple, short slides rather than using a lot of variables and triggers and too many pieces and parts on a single slide. Makes development quicker and maintenance easier, at least for me. If you split it over three slides, you could also use Quiz slides and provide feedback at each step.

Hope this helps.

HI Altan.

Like Ashley said, doing the Rest to Initial State will reset everything, but maybe that is the best way to go in this case? The learner will have to go through the slide again, but at least you will know that there won't be any glitches. And you'll be reinforcing the learning. :-)

But it wouldn't take too much time/effort to redesign the slides. All of the content is already there, so it is just a matter of moving everything onto layers or separate slides.
