this is going to be so simple I am sure! I have a slide written by someone else and only one layer is relevant, so I deleted 2nd layer and now want both base and first layer to display when learner gets to that slide. How do I do this? Have tried trigger set at 'when timeline starts' but that didn't work.

Hm, this works for me. See here the trigger setup I used to display both baselayer and additional layer.
I was putting trigger on layer not on base layer - oh doh!
