You can definitely customize the player fonts, size, and buttons. It is well detailed in this tutorial.
For the part where you want it to be more prominent like highlighting the next button on specific triggers - there is no specific feature in Storyline yet that can do this.
Other options:
1. Disable the next button by default and enable it once you want the user to advance to the next slide using change state trigger.
2. Try this execution shared by one of our heroes in an old thread on how you can nudge the user to click 'Next' on a different approach. You can check the video demo here.
