Sounds odd Marion - do you want to upload the slide or can you screenshot the variable setup and the triggers associated with the variable to try and recreate what you are doing.
Thank you for looking at this for me. Attached is an example. You can test by entering the word confine or contain in either of the boxes that have a c prefix. You will notice the Ctotal in the bottom left changes from a zero to an a.

not sure why it is doing what it is...but I can get the number variable to work after the user clicks the submit button - is that any help? I have attached the update sample file so you can see the triggers. Sorry I couldn't be more help
