Old articulate files

Jun 28, 2021

I have quite a collection of articulate files I have created over the years. This may seem like a silly question but I need to be sure about my next step...may I get rid of all the old versions that I have created and only keep the story files from my latest version without losing anything other than previous iterations?

Hi, Deborah,

You only need to save all previous .story files if you might be required to provide proof of what was in any previous version of the course. This is sometimes necessary for courses in highly regulated industries.

Another reason to keep an older version is if it includes any interesting interactions that were deleted in subsequent versions. Then, if it's decided to include that interaction again, you could import it instead of having to re-create it.

Otherwise, there's no need to keep multiple versions of the same course.

However, I think it is a good idea to keep .story file for the current version intact. Do the updates in a copy. Then you won't have to re-create the entire course if the newer file gets corrupted.

The old computer adage is "the only people who think they have too many copies of a file are those who haven't yet lost work."   My wife doesn't like me to save paper copies, because they fill up the house, but in terms of computer copies, I can buy thousands of houses worth of storage for less than we spend on a nice dinner out, and I can hold it in one hand. Nothing bad can come of having a copy of a file you don't need, but like Judy says, nothing good can come of deleting a file you might someday need.

If the clutter bothers you, move them off to an external, or cloud storage.
