Open Menu and Free navigation mid-course?

Hello experts...
For the first half of my course, I'd like to restrict the learning so it's in sequence. Then, once they've completed the introductory content, they're free to learn about any topic.
What I'd like to do is set the beginning state of the course menu to collapsed, and then somehow "magically" open it up on the left with a trigger, making it obvious that they can use those menu items freely.
Has anyone heard of, or have a way of manipulating the state of the player menu through a trigger?
THANKS :)

You may have to create your own custom menu. If I were doing it, I would make the introductory portion a separate content, but that may be too easy. I'm sure there are other more complex, more glamorous ways to do the same thing.
Of course, if I were doing it, I'd probably make each topic separate. Smaller chunks make for better learning, and allow users to find and review specific items easier, but maybe those advantages are important only to me.
Hello Walt
Thank you for your comment. I had thought about doing it this way, which would make developing it easy, but perhaps the user experience suffer (we don't have a proper LMS that would lead you from one SL module to the next, for example).
I'll consider the option though, thanks!
