Optimizing for iPad -- Shape with transparency or PNG with transparency
Oct 29, 2014
Hi there,
I have a course that runs wonderfully on a PC but is very sluggish on the iPad. I'm trying to optimize all my content for the iPad--I've removed the majority of my transitions, removed some audio, removed extra states I didn't really need, etc. I have a walkthrough that uses a fullscreen black box with 30% transparency that highlights different objects on stage. What I'm wondering is....would it improve performance if I replaced it with a PNG?
I ask because I read an article about HTML5 and iPads that said "For some reason, using the opacity CSS property sometimes interferes with hardware-accelerated rendering, so if you experience slowdowns and think you’re doing everything right, see if you have opacity set somewhere."

Hello Keari!
You may want to look into the information here about content working slow on iPads.
You could try replacing the item with a PNG and see if this does help the performance on iPads.
Hi Emily,
Thanks for the link. All my users are using an iPad 3 or newer. My course is very non-linear and I'm wondering if that also has an effect on performance.
Hello Keari!
That could definitely have an impact on the performance as well. We generally recommend testing the course with HTML5 to see what options would work the best. Have you tried using the Articulate Mobile Player to see if this works better?
