overwriting courses in storyline 2

Sep 16, 2015

Hello.

I think  I may have a unique problem. I have two sets of courses in storyline 2 that are published to Articulate online. The second set is a mirror image of the first, but with a few updates. The 2nd, newer set has the player in "restricted" mode and the seek bar read only. For the older "first" set of courses, I would like them to have the player in "allow user to drag seekbar" and the player in "free" mode.

When I set the course to this mode, and publish "over top" of the old version, the player in the actual course does not do what i just set it to do. It remains locked. I want management to be able to review courses without necessarilly having to listen to every slide. I'm not sure what I could be doing wrong. I have had some trouble "publishing over" or overwriting existing courses. is this common? Surely I can set the player differently for every course.

Hi Pryce,

Are you overwriting the first course, or using the same name and set up for each of them? Could you be accessing a cached version? Id' look at logging out and logging in and/or trying it in a different browser to see how it beahves? Otherwise we'll likely want to take a look at your Storyline files and the Articulate Online account? It may be easier to view that if you're able to connect with our Support team?

And when you say a cached version, what do you mean by that. I am basically taking a course that has its navigation restricted, changing the player to free on the source file, and republishing using the same name. the program says” a course with this name already exists, would you like to overwrite it.” and I click yes

Hi Pryce,

The cached version is what your browser is storing so that if you're to access it again it doesn't have to reload it entirely. If your overwriting the file on AO you no longer have the original, but you still may see the cached version - are you looking to have two copies or only one?

Articulate Online does not support content items with the same name.  When publishing to Articulate Onlinewith a duplicate title, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing content item:

A document with the same name already exists.  Would you like to overwrite the document?

If you publish a content item you may be prompted to overwrite an existing content item. If you say Yes, the original content item will no longer be available for viewing. It will be replaced by the new content item you publish to your account.

You will still be able to run reports on the older versions of the content item. When running a report, you will be given an option to specify the version of the content item you wish to run a report on.

Ashley was right - The cached version is what your browser is storing so that if you're to access it again it doesn't have to reload it entirely. If your overwriting the file on AO you no longer have the original, but your browser may still be showing you the old version from your local cache.

That is why changing browsers shows the new version, while using the same browser shows the old version.

The cache is a place on your local drive where every browser, no matter which one, stores all the pages you view. Then when you return to view that page, it loads it from your drive, instead of the internet, because that is faster. You get the cached version because you viewed the old version, and since both versions have the same name, your browser thinks they are the same and loads the old one. That is why you see the new version when you use a different browser; it does not have the old version in its cache. That old version doesn't exist anymore, except in your local cache. If you clear your cache, you will not see it anymore.

Nobody else will see it unless they viewed the old version.
