Own Quiz Review - How to switch form Question to Question

Apr 18, 2019

Hi there

I'm struggling with the Quiz Review in Storyline. With this video I found out how to make my own feedback layers for the Quiz Review and how to set the correct triggers for the review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh0BXT8wN24&feature=youtu.be

So far so good.

But in my story I have questions with  branching (if user selects anser A it jumps to 1.2 , if B is selected it jumps to the next question on slide 1.3 etc...) so the questions are not in an order from 1-6 for exemple. What do I need to do, that my own feedback layer shows up after each answered question? I persum it needs some more triggers....but what kind?

Enclosed my story.

Thank you for your support!

Hi Lara! Your course is looking really good. To get the quiz review to continue the same branching path, you can use variables for each question, and triggers on your custom review layer ("Feedback"). Here's how I started it:

  • Create a number variable for each question, like GA1_1, with an initial value of 0.
  • Add a trigger to the base layer of your question slide to adjust the variable to equal a different value for each answer choice. For GA1.1, I added a trigger to adjust the variable to equal 1 when the user clicks the submit button if radio button 4 was selected. *Make sure this trigger comes before the "submit interaction" trigger.
  • It gets a little tricky, here, because you don't have a "Next" button in you trigger wizard since it isn't enabled on the slide. I would create a button on your review layer called "Next." Add a trigger to jump to each branching slide when the user clicks this button with a condition of the variable having the right value.

For slide GA1.1, if the user chooses radio button 4, the variable gets a value of 1. Then, when they see the review layer, clicking Next will jump to slide GA1.4 because the value of the variable is 1.

I've attached your modified file so you can have a closer look. Just remember to create a new variable for each question slide, and a different trigger for each branching option on your "Feedback" layer based on the variable value.

Dear Crystal, again thanks a lot! You are my hero :-)

I unterstand how to get to my aim, but persum I miss a step. I'm still strunggling with the function of variables.

Do I need to create a new variable for each question option?  Otherwise my triggers on the feedback layer do not make sense.... can you take a look on my file? I startet on Slide 1.1

Thank you!

That's right, Lara!

You'll want to adjust the variable to equal a different value for each answer choice. For example,

  • Set GA1_1 equal to 1.00 when the user clicks Submit if radio button 1 is selected.
  • Set GA1_1 equal to 2.00 when the user clicks Submit if radio button 2 is selected.
  • Set GA1_1 equal to 3.00 when the user clicks Submit if radio button 3 is selected.
  • And so on...

Give that a try, and let us know if you need more help along the way!

Hi Alyssa!

Thank you! Your reply helped alot!

As usual it came up another problem, for which I need a solution. On my own created feedback layer I have now a "Next" button, and the forward + next butto of the player. This is not userfriendly, then the player forward button is not leading to the same slide then the next button on the feedback layer. Crystal metioned, that i can't remove the player forward + next on the feedback layer. Any idee how I can get a solution for this point? See enclosed my buttons...

Thank you!

Hi Alyssa!

Awh, very good Idea. Thank you!

While working to solve this Problem it occured two more Problems.

1. I would like to give the possibility to change the submitted answer, while going back. This, I found out works, when I change the Silde Settings of the Base layer to when the slides pops up again > "original stated". So far so good. Finlay I found out, that during the quiz review i don't see my choosen answer on my feedback layer. Is there an other way to make my issue possible?

2. The user should be able to move forward and back between the Muliple Choice Questions after submitted the answer. As each question option leeds to another slide, I cannot us the "Next" button, because this just move to the next arranged slide. What I need is:

  • When the slide shows up the first time, the "next" button should not be shown. It should be shown, when the user comes back to this question, to look at the question again (ev. change the selected answert 1.) and then jump to the next slide as branched with the "next" Button.

I tryed to solve it with triggers -
move to slide xy when users klicks "Next" and the "Optionfield 1" is set
But there i get messed up with my other triggers.

My enclosed file will help to understand- See Slide 1.4.
Any Idea to handel this problem?

Hi Lara!

In your quiz, learners are submitting each question one at a time. Once the question is submitted, there isn't a way to go back and change the answer.

It sounds like you might prefer to allow learners to submit all their answers at the end of the quiz. This would allow learners to freely go back and change their answers before reaching the result slide.

Would that method be an option for you?

Hi Alyssa!

Thank you!Yes, that could be a option!

What about my 2. Question? any ideas for that one?
Jumping between the Questions, without changing the choosen answer. When the slide shows up the first time, the "next" button should not be shown. It should be shown, when the user comes back to this question, to look at the question again and then jump to the next slide as branched with the "next" Button.

Hi Alyssa! Thank you! I'm so glad about the help I get here in the community!

I'm working on a few diffrent versions, therefore my many questions. The next button I need to solve the problem on my feedback layer, as you recommended in an erarlier reply.

The problem is the defined branching, the next button is not leading to the branched slide - it just moves to the next numbered slide.
