pausing a slide till a text field is filled out

Nov 08, 2013

My first post so I apologize if this has been answered 100 times already.  How do you make a slide timeline pause until a text entry is filled out?  I want the user to put in their first name then we will use it on the same slide as part of a demonstration.

Thank you.  Storyline addict and fan!

Hrm, like there is a video or animation that needs to continue after the user submits their name?

What you could do is break it up into slide layers. So there's the base layer with the first half of the animation/slide info. Then at the end of the timeline, insert the text field and a "submit" button. When the user types their name in (converts that to your name var), and hits the submit button, that sends off the "show this layer" trigger, which will continue the second half of your animation. Then you can hide or show certain elements of the base layer as needed, or hide the entire thing if you want. If you're using a movie file, you can export the video file as two separate videos to import cut to the places where they need to start/end.

Did that help?

Submit button triggers : (1) set nameVar=textfield. (2) Show layer.

Hi Steve and Janine,

Steve, welcome to the community. This question comes up a lot. I'm attaching a story that shows 2 different ways to pause a slide so Learners must fill in a text entry. The first one users a layer, the second one uses a hidden caption. In both cases, the "warning" is triggered if the Learner clicks the next button without filling in the text.

If you look at the notes section in slide 1.1 and 1.3, you'll see a bit more info there. If you're unsure how to do any of this, please shout out with questions.
