Player controls

Sep 25, 2012

Dear community,

I have a question related to the player controls. Attached find an image which explains what I try to do.

I would like to have a FAQ button available for the learner to have available during the entire course. Within Presenter you could create this easily so that it pops up when you click it and dissapears when clicked again. In storyline I cannot create this interaction. The button is there and works for th first slide but not for the entire course. My question. Can this work and can you help me create it?

Hello Jim, welcome to Heroes!

The functionality you're looking for is generally fairly straightforward to accomplish in Storyline, and here is a tutorial for how it's normally done: http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/choosing-player-features.aspx

It sounds like you may have the tab set up to only show on specific slides, which is a setting that is set in slide properties.  You may want to take a look at this (scroll down to player features): http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/controlling-a-slide-s-advance-behavior-and-other-slide-properties.aspx

Hope this helps!

Hello Brian,

Thank you for your answer. I think I did not explain clearly. The FAQ is an Engage Interaction file which I would like to have available at all time for 80 percent of the slides. I do not want to use the Top Interactions within storyline as they are less flashy (is this correct English?).

The FAQ Engage feature should come up when clicked and should dissapear when clicked. If I use the  slides proporties as you describe it will not collapse when clicked.

Hello Jim - I haven't played around with it a lot, but if you're looking for the exact same functionality as what you have in Presenter (insert Engage as a tab) I don't believe you're going to be able to repro that in Storyline.

If someone here in the community can confirm otherwise that would be great.

You should be able to set your FAQ engage interaction up as a lightbox slide, then in your player controls add that lightbox as a tab.  On the slides in your presentation where you don't want the tab just edit the slide properties to remove the tab.

This will be different than inserting Engage into presenter because instead of clicking the tab button again to close the FAQ interaction, the lightbox will have a "X" close button in the upper right corner of the FAQ window that will collapse the lightbox, taking the learner back to the slide content.

I've attached a sample story file for how I would set this up...

Brian, Phill,

Thanks for this allready. We are getting there as it is almost  perfect to my use. Two questions are still remaining. I have attached a picture.

Nr. 1:  I can easily remove this message from the menu when I hide this. Correct?

Nr. 2: I wonder why you have added CLOSE FAQ as the window can be closed using the red X. Was there a reason for it?

Thanks guys

Oops!  Was playing around with that close FAQ button, which doesn't do anything, and forgot to remove it before uploading the story file here.

As far as #1, yes you can easily remove it from the menu by following the steps in this tutorial.  Just scroll down until you see "Removing items from the menu": http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/customizing-the-player-menu.aspx

I've attached an updated story file below...
