Please help with variable - I'm getting confused & frustrated!!

Sep 18, 2014

Hi,

I am attempting to add a certificate at the end of a course to do with our new phone system, but as we don't have an LMS the only option is through Storyline. I know it must be possible using variables against each of the function buttons, to get the Certificate slide to show. I do not want it to show until they have viewed all of them, but the menu and selection does not need to be in a set manner (I don't want it to be restrictive).

Please can someone help me with the variables as I just can't get a good enough understanding to work it out.

Attached is the bare bones of the slide with the function buttons, the slides it takes them too and the Certificate.

Thanks in advance!!!

Nic

Here is one option to do this: At the last slide of each topic/section, set a True/False variable to true to signify completion of this section/topic. On the menu slide, add a trigger that shows the certificate slide when all (in your case nine) variables are true. See attached a revised file.

Hello Nicola,

Was just looking at your .story file, and it doesn't appear that you're asking your learner for their name anywhere, which is necessary to populate the "name" variable you have created.

Take a look at the modified .story file attached here.  I've basically added a layer to the first slide of your course that will ask them to enter their name before they begin.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks Michael, I knew there must be away but was struggling to get the solution...a common conversation I used to have with my maths teacher!!

Brain, thanks for the additional help. My name element is on a slide I cut out so anyone helping did not have to wade through lots of slides, but it was a good spot given I was struggling

Thanks for your help!

Hello Bridget!

Hopefully Michael can post his example if he still has it :) Unfortunately some of the attached files did get lost in the transition to the new Heroes.

Attached is a super generic file with the options suggested above. Each section has a variable to set to "true" once the user completes it (in this file by using the next button) then the last slide has the option to click for a certificate tab if all of the variables are set to true. The menu is not restricted, so you can just right to topic 3 if needed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply, Emily.  Actually it's not exactly what I am trying to do and everything I try doesn't seem to work.

I have a table of contents page where the user can click on any one of 6 items and move to that section of the module.  When they complete the section they will come back to the TOC.  Once the 6th topic is complete they should go to a Summary section to finish the course.  I have tried it two different ways - first with a count variable so when they finish a section 1 is added to the variable and if the number is 5 or less they go to the TOC but if it is 6 or more they go to the summary.  I couldn't make it work.  Then I tried what is attached - which is closer to what you did - 6 different T/F variables and if all of them are true moving them to the summary.  Also not working.

Help?

@ Bridget: I had a look at your story file and found that you had set Jump to 8 Summary Scene when all the TOC variables were true except for TOC5 which you still had set at false on all slides referring to jumping to 8 Summary Scene. Also I can not find a trigger to set the variable TOC4 to "true" although you need this before the switch to the 8 Summary scene will work as it is one of the conditions you have set. I wasn't sure where you want to activate that so removing it as a condition may work otherwise add the trigger where you want it.

In short, change the reference to the condition AND TOC5 to "true" in the Trigger Jump to 8 Summary scene for all slides where you have that trigger and add a trigger to adjust the variable TOC4 to "true" where you need it. I hope this helps.

Hello Bridget!

I did see as well that you have the TOC5 set as false in the conditions. Also, you will only need the "jump to summary slide" trigger on the table of contents slide.

Attached is  an update of the generic one posted earlier having them all go back to a contents slide, and then the content slide will jump to a summary slide on timeline start if all variables are set to true.
