Preventing learner from advancing without going through all the content on the slide

Jun 03, 2020

I am new to Storyline 3, and have 2 questions:

- how do I prevent the learner from advancing to other layers while the audio is still playing in the base layer?
i.e. would like to avoid 2 different layers playing at the same time

- how do I prevent the learner from advancing to the next slide before going through all the information e.g. audio / video finishes playing, or all the layers on the slide is completed

I do not know how to use variables.  Would anyone be able to help answer the query?

Thank you!

Hi Pauline,

Happy to help here! I've outlined each question in bolding:

How do I prevent the learner from advancing to other layers while the audio is still playing in the base layer?

You can add a hotspot as an invisible block to cover whatever shape/button advances the learner to the layer and end it when the audio completes. You can do this by going to the Insert tab and selecting Hotspot.

How do I keep from two layers playing at the same time?

Check your slide layer properties. Your slide layers should default to hiding when other slide layers are present.

How do I prevent the learner from advancing to the next slide before going through all the information e.g., audio/video finishes playing?

In your Player Properties, you can set the menu to Restricted, and this will disable the Next button on every slide until the timeline ends.

How do I prevent the learner from advancing to the next slide before all the layers on the slide are completed?

You can use a trigger to disable the Next button when the timeline starts, and then create another trigger to set it to Normal when the states of the buttons that took you to each layer are Visited.

I hope this helps! Feel free to take a look at the user guide for any other questions you may come across:
