I hadn't tried this - but just took a look and see the same behavior. I took a look and saw this was reported to our QA team recently. I'll share this thread with them as well and that way I can post any additional updates here once their available.
I suspect it has everything to do with the slider :) and I do not think it is broken, but do think that, because it needs to create variables (one for each slider increment) along with it variable to work with, it is unable to be copied. I did a test where I created the slider using 3 increments of the variables, then deleted 2 of them and renamed the initial variable. I was able to copy the objects in whole to a new layer, yet still could not copy the layer using the duplicate or copy/paste functions. I then renamed the pasted slider. The sliders both, then automatically recreated the variables for each distinct name.
Thanks Dennis - it's interesting situation definitely, and it was already reported to QA (within the last few days) so I'll keep an eye on it to see what they say. It may be by design or not working as expected.... we'll see.
