Problems with triggers

Feb 08, 2019

Hi everyone,

I have been having trouble with certain triggers when I preview a scene on Storyline 2. I have put triggers on certain slides which will prevent the user from clicking on an object which will automatically trigger an audio file until a different audio file has finished playing. When I preview the whole scene, the trigger doesn't work but when I preview the slide by itself the trigger works. Does anybody have an explanation for this?

Hi there, Paolo.  Are these triggers controlled by variables?  If so, are the variables adjusted anywhere else in the scene?

If that's not it, we can have a closer look!  With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.  I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Thanks for sharing your file with me, Paolo.  It looks like the same variable for each shape is used on several slides.  For example, slide 1.8 uses the carré variable again, but the variable has already been set to true on slide 1.2.  Variables keep their value throughout the course.

The solution is to either create a trigger reset the variable to false when the timeline starts on each of these slides, or to use different variables for each slide (Carre1.2, Carre1.8, etc).  Let me know if that works better for you!

That is great. Thank you for helping with this!

Would you be able to help me with a different matter? I was wondering if there is any way that you can increase the player size in Storyline 2 so that it fills the whole screen? I have tried to use a custom size but this doesn't seem to change anything. We have changed the player settings but it still doesn't fill the full screen. Is there a solution to this?

Paolo Pini

Hi Crystal

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

We are able to maximise the player settings as per your suggestion but what we’re finding is that the output shows in a square shaped maximised window as opposed to full a width landscape window. I assume this square output is the designed output for the Articulate exports.

Is this correct?

Kind regards

Paolo

I see, Paolo.  Thank you for explaining.  It may be your slide size.  The default slide size for Storyline uses a 4:3 ratio, which is more square than the other common ratio of 16:9.  Does that sound right?

By the way, replying by email will include your signature with contact information.  No worries, but you can edit it out here if you'd like.

Hi Crystal

Thanks for getting back to me. We will give the 16:9 ratio a try to see if that works better for us.

I have another question - sorry!

We seem to have a problem when publishing our courses at the moment. We publish for the web and select HTML output (without the Ariticulate Mobile Player being selected). See screen grab attached.

The course publishes and we get the full output files however we are unable to tun the HTML .exe files. When we try to open them we just get a blank version of the first slide in the course. If we click the .SWF file version that opens and runs correctly but the HTML version does not.

Can you please help explain what we are doing wrong?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Paolo,

Thanks for sharing that screen grab, that's helpful.

It looks like you are publishing to the web. Are you uploading to a web server prior to testing the file? I want to make sure you're not viewing the course locally, but in the environment it was published for.

Also, I noticed that you're publishing to your S: Drive, which I assume is not a local drive, so you may want to consider that as well.

Here's some documentation, which includes the link for publishing to the web as well.
