Quiz Question Spacing Problem

Sep 22, 2014

I'm currently working in Storyline 1 in a rush job with a big client. I ran into a major problem with the spacing being inconsistent between questions. I have a four-answer multiple choice question with two answers that are one line and two answers that are two lines. One answer is taking up twice as much space as the others. I've checked the font size, looked for strange characters, extra spaces, etc. but I can't find anything. My template is straightforward, and I'm copying the questions from Word, using the backend (Edit Multiple Choice button) to avoid any weird Word formatting.

This should be a simple issue to resolve, but nothing seems to fix it. I've already lost a lot of time on this, and really need help resolving it.

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the community.

In a situation like this, it's usually easier to troubleshoot if we can see the slide(s). Would you be able to upload it for the community to take a look?

One thought: have you checked to see the text box shape settings, that is whether they are Do Not Autofit, Shrink Text on Overflow, or Resize shape to Fit text? You can do this by right-clicking on each of the answer boxes to display a shortcut menu.

Select Format Shape, and when that dialog box appears, click Text Box to access those settings (Do Not Autofit, etc.)

Hi Mark and welcome to Heroes!

I'm sorry to hear about this odd behavior with your file, and Rebecca's correct that it's typically easier to diagnose such things by looking at the .story file - so if you'd like to share it here you can always attach it using the paperclip icon. You can also connect with our Support engineers here.

Also, I did want to share some general troubleshooting steps in addition to what Rebecca shared:

Have you confirmed that you're working locally as described here?

Have you tried importing this project into a new .story file as described here?

Are you seeing this behavior in all your Storyline files? If so, you may want to conduct the repair detailed here.

Please feel free to let us know how it's behaving after checking into those or if you'd like to share your file.

Hey Mark,

I've experienced the same pain you have. The answer choices would always move around on me after I tried placing them where I wanted them.  This is the main reason I stopped using the default quizing slides and just stick to the freeform. You can easily convert your multiple choice question to a freeform pick one question. You might lose the correct/incorrect layers though.

1. Select all of your answer choices and press CTRL-X to cut them.

2. Now delete the box that contained the answer choices. This should delete the interaction.

3. Now press CTRL-V to paste the answers.

4. Convert this slide to a Pick one to get the same functionality as a multiple choice quiz slide.

This should allow you much more freedom as to how the answer choices behave.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I discovered the main source of the problem. The PC I've been working on had the text set to 125%. When I looked at the original template on another machine, it didn't have this issue. I'm not sure why this setting would cause an inconsistency between slides within Storyline, but once I changed the setting in my Control Panel back to 100%, the inconsistency and inexplicable spaces between answers that I couldn't get rid of went away.
