ranking vs. sorting vs. ???

Feb 04, 2014

I would greatly appreciate some tutoring on what Storyline/Articulate is capable of for creating game-type applications.

I was attracted to the drag and drop functions, but I am not sure what is the best way to go...

Goal: create a Golf game where users must predict the correct ranking of 10 Golfers in an upcoming tournament...by picking who will be the Top FIve finishers, and their order.

This predicted order needs to be saved until after the tournament.

Players get points for how closely they predicted the finishing order.

Vision:

A listing of players numbered 1 through 10 down the Left Hand margin.

Each "player" will have some Biographical information and statistical information about previous results on this course, and world ranking, driving distance, accuracy from tee, and so on.

Players would drag each player to the Right Hand side, where there are targets numbered 1 through 5.

They match the player who they think will win to the target numbered "First", then "Second" "Third" "Fourth" and "Fifth."

Players should be able to edit their choices for a period of time.

I visualize this game being adaptable to things like Predicting the Top Five Performing Stocks next week out of a pool of selected candidates, with data and statistics on Companies guiding the choices and rankings.

Questions:

Which tools in Storyline (or any other product of Articulate) could be used to accomplish something like this?

Can a Template be created that could be automatically populated with a different list of Golfers every week?

(The idea is that a list of Golfers could be imported as Variables (?) rather than manually creating a new list every time a new version of the game is used)

Can the resulting Rankings/Choices be stored/archived somehow so that Players can review their rankings at a later date and compare their performances?

If this is not feasible via Storyline, could a Developer use an SDK to customize something available from Articulate for this purpose?

Thanks for any help in understanding the suitability of Storyline/Articulate for something like this.

Hi Bob and welcome to Heroes!

A number of out community members use Storyline to create "game like" applications, although I haven't seen something that is similar to what you described. If you do a quick search for other game examples, I did find this thread where Christine links to a few other examples and this discussion about possibilities within Storyline.

In regards to your specific questions, there would not be a way to import a list of golfers as variables that would change each week. Also, if you need to store the results of a users attempt you may want to look into an LMS.

Here are some open-source LMS options that may meet your tracking needs:

*  Dokeos:  http://campus.dokeos.com/

*  eFront:  http://www.efrontlearning.net/open-source

*  Moodle:  http://moodle.org/

You can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Articulate Online here:

http://www.articulate.com/freetrial

Tracking results in a text file or database is not supported. If you'd like to track your Storyline content without an LMS, I'd recommend searching through the forums for how other users have accomplished that.

Best of luck with your project, and if you're able to share what you've come up with we'd love to see it!
