Hi Lowell- By design, when you add a shape or a button, the right hand column will remain as "rectangle" or "button" unless you type text into the shape or button itself. See the screenshot below for reference:
If being able to edit the right column shapes and button names that don't have text is something you would like to be able to take advantage of, I highly encourage you to submit a feature request for it! :)
Hi. Please kindly advise if there has been any update to this question.
Changing the object (eg 'Text' or 'Rectangle') name within the grey area of the timeline without adding text to the object would be very useful because the GSAP accesses the object based on that 'text' in the right hand column and not the name you edit in the left most white column. It seems the only way to change the name in the left grey column is by adding text to the actual object.

You should be able to double-click on the object name so that it becomes blue and editable.

Hi Daniel!
We haven't changed this approach in Storyline 360. If we do make a change, I'll update you in this discussion.
Is there any update on this. Seems like a very easy fix. Really need this...thanks.
Hi GURU!
You can change the name of objects on the left side of the object on the timeline. Here's a screenshot of where to click.
