Restricted-but-flexible navigation?

Aug 18, 2023

My project in a nutshell:

A series of slides with the menu visible, and navigation restricted so the learner must progress through the activity one slide at a time.  Of course restricting navigation makes the items in the menu un-clickable, making it  more of a visual guide.

The client has asked if we can engineer the menu so that viewing a slide unlocks just the next title in the menu, but titles beyond that remain locked. So if the user is viewing slide 4 and ready to move forward, they can click the next button OR the slide 5 title in the menu but the titles after 5 would still be disabled.  When viewing slide 5, the slide 6 title would be accessible, etc.
I have a feeling that this could be done, but only with a custom, hand-chiselled stack of triggers and variables.  I'm just hoping there's a setting buried somewhere that I haven't found.  Thanks in advance!

The original Storyline worked the way you want. However, at some point, they redid the programming. Now, when the Menu has Restricted navigation, users can only click it to go to previously viewed slides. They cannot click it to advance. And there's no setting to change that.

To get the functionality you want, you'd need to build a custom menu. That could be added to the Master Slide, so it would appear on all other slides.

And, yes, the custom menu would need a "hand-chiseled stack of triggers and variables" to work.

This is a solution with which you can get this done anyway you want.

The menu is just a list. So we just block the list items. Thus said and done.. and it works flawless.

One big plus of this approach is that you can customize the menu/listitems if you want to.

As you can see in the second review.
And here is the working Storyline.

PS. As this is done in a what older version, i didnot check it in the current one.
