Retake quiz and leave previous answers intact

Feb 23, 2016

Storyline 2 latest version on Windows 7 question.

I want users to take a test and have an option to retake the test and retain the prior answers.

We have a predefined graded results slide (has user score, passing score, and 'review' and 'retake' buttons). The retake button has two triggers; Reset Results on the Results slide, and Jump to first slide in the test.

When doing this in preview mode, the user is returned to the first slide but the results on all slides are cleared.

If I remove the 'reset results' trigger, the original results are intact on restart BUT the answers can't be changed.

What am I not understanding?

I have searched the forum and most posts seem to be related to the inverse of my question; how do you clear the results on retest.

Thanks for any tips and please feel free to point me to existing resources I may have missed.

Hi Doug! The built in retry quiz option via the results slide is the best bet, but you are right and it does not retain the previous answers.

If you are needing this functionality as more of a guide/reminder so that the user can aim for the correct answer, perhaps allowing multiple attempts per question with customized feedback would be better.

Leslie,

Darn. I'm going to have to think about this. The issue for us is that we're replacing a bespoke training management system with SAP's LMS. Currently users answer questions, get to the end, and score the test. While taking the test, they have the option to go back to any previously answered question and change their answer. After scoring, they are able to see an overview of all the questions and easily understand which questions were missed. They can then open and modify their answers to just the missed questions. They're allowed to score a second time. If they fail again, the test is locked, they need to talk to their manager about the issue and the manager then releases the test back to the employee for another attempt.

For reference, we require all new hires to show they've read all of our quality procedures and take a test on each one to demonstrate competency. For most new hires, this is between 30 and 40 procedures and tests to be completed within 60 days of hire so this is a major pain point for employees and managers.

The Storyline model is very different (it's question rather than test based) so I'm going to have to work with our managers to figure out the best approach to the design.

  • If I tell a person they failed only at the end and then make them re-answer EVERY question, they're gonna be royally upset.
  • If I allow them to review the quiz so they can see which ones they missed then retake the test, they're going to have to write down all the correct answers and then re-answer every question again. This is going to take extra time and be quite annoying.
  • If I opt to allow them to know they missed question <x> and retry it <y> times, that may work.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you. I'm coming down to a system that allows the user to try any question 2 times and not re-take the quiz. This is close to our current model (two tries and you're out). It suffers from a more complex 'unlock and return to the user' process and will require the user to re-answer all the questions after a failed test attempt. It will be interesting to see how  users work around these new features (and they will find workarounds...).
