Reviewing previous video/slides in a multi-video training

Feb 12, 2021

I have a long video that I trimmed into five smaller videos, placing one on each slide.  I don't want the learner to jump ahead so I locked the slider and set each slide to proceed to the next slide at the end of the timeline with no previous or next buttons.  However, if the learner wants to review previously viewed slides/videos, I want them to be able to go back.

Initially, I thought I would show the menu and restrict it so they could move to previously viewed slides, but not forward.  However, when I tested it and selected a previously viewed slide, it allowed me to 'select' the item on the menu, but remained on the currently playing slide/video.

I then thought I could add next and previous buttons with conditions set for a variable triggered by the end of the timeline when a slide was viewed.  The same thing happened.  It acted as though I could click on the previous button, but would remain on the currently playing slide/video.

I feel like I am missing something.  Is it not possible to allow learners to go back without going forward when the slides are videos?

Hi, Michelle!

I understand that you want your learners to be able to go back to a previously viewed video but not skip to the next one. I found that restricting both the "menu" and the "next" button does the trick. For a more detailed guide, check this out.

I didn't use states or variables but I'd like to review your file to take a further look and hopefully help in pinpointing culprit. If it's alright with you, you may attach your file here (just the slides with the videos will do). For now, here's the demo that I created.

I hope to hear again from you!

Hey, Luiza!

I am attaching the slides.  I don't really want all the variables, but when I couldn't get the menu to allow me to go back to a previously viewed slide, I was attempting another possible mechanism.  I want this to be the easiest possible viewing option for learners to view the video material without jumping ahead but having the option of reviewing previous material.

Thanks for the file, Michelle!

I played around it and noticed that the slides are set to 'resume saved state'. This prevents the slide from being reviewed because the learner is taken back to the end of the slide's timeline when he tries to revisit it. As such, he'll be redirected to the next slide. This all happens quickly, making it seem like the 'previous' button has not done its job.

To fix this, here are the settings that I configured:

1. Set each slide to "automatically decide". The premise of this option is expertly explained here.

2. Check the box beside "restrict next/previous buttons" in the Player settings.

Although you don't need to use variables this way, the second layer of the slides doesn't show up anymore because the "next" button is greyed out until the timeline ends. The first two slides are configured this way so you can more easily compare your options.

Best of luck!
