No, Storyline 2 can open Storyline 1 files but because of changes in SL2 it cannot save as a Storyline 1 file. I doubt this will be added as a new feature.
Absolutely Nancy! I typically right-click on the file and tell my computer what program to open the file with.
In addition, a backup file that is compatible with Storyline 1 will be created when you do upgrade the file to Storyline 2 and you can run both programs on the same computer.
This seems quite disappointing. I have a SL2 file that is literally 15 slides of shapes with text in them, nothing else. Countless of other companies have made their files backwards compatible, unless you use a feature ONLY compatible with a new version. Seems like an oversight for the programmers not to do this.
Now rather than save this SL2 file to be opened by a colleagued in SL1, I will spend a nice long time re creating the whole thing, I just wish there was a good reason.

If I have storyline 1 and 2, can I somehow open a storyline 1 file and not upgrade it to storyline 2?

Thanks, but even when I right click and say open with storyline 1 it opens storyline 2.
Try the method shared here to see if launching the program first helps the issue.

You are welcome to share your thoughts with our developers here if you wish John.
The reason is that they want everyone to buy the new software
