SCORM 1.2 Data

Jun 14, 2023

Hi all,

Now I don't known if this could be an idea for some extra functionality in any future release in Storyline but I was working on a module (published for SCORM 1.2) that was a bit big and when it was tested on the LMS, we found out that the content began to exceed the character limit at a certain slide before the end, so the course did not bookmark beyond this point.

Even though the suspend_data limit usually does not affect the completion of the content on an LMS, this was a concern.

Now as we all know the suspend_data limit for SCORM 1.2 is 4,096 characters but I did not know that we had exceeded this until it was tested!

OK, the alternative was to split it up into smaller sections which means going back to the drawing board for a WHILE or publishing to SCORM 2004 the latter of which is problematic on OUR LMS.

So... a future release of storyline would ideally have the functionality of indicating if the course has already exceeded 4,096 characters before OR AFTER publishing.

Now, alternatively is there any other way around this or do I just have to make sure that all my courses are split into bite-sized modules that do not exceed this limit?

Thanks in advance

Hello Keith,

Happy to help!

There isn't a way to calculate for the suspend_data value before or after a course is published, but you can enable the LMS debug logs for your course so you can see the value of your suspend_data in real time as you go through your course. Here's how:

Note that we don't recommend enabling this for courses that have already been deployed to your learners, but you can enable this feature to test out courses that have yet to be released to see if they will exceed the suspend_data limit or not.
