Screen captures for mobile apps

Aug 25, 2014

I am needing to put together a training on a mobile app and don't know where to start. Is there an Articulate utility for capturing screens on an Adroid or iSO platform and importing to my desktop?

You can take screenshots on your Android device directly and then download them to a PC. Depending on OS version and device, you may have to press different keys, but on my Samsung Galaxy, I simultaneously press the Home and Power button to take a screenshot. For iOS devices, I use a neat app called Reflector, which mirrors your iOS device's screen to a PC or Mac. You can then import these bitmaps into Storyline.

Samsung has a new app out called SideSync, but I think it only works on the newer Samsung devices.

As for iOS, I think you can do screenshots by pressing the home and power buttons at the same time, just as with the Galaxy.

Also, if you're not using a newer Galaxy device, there are apps out there in the Play store that allow you to record everything that's happening on your screen and then transfer it to your computer as a movie file, but I think you need to Root your device before they'll work...

@Glenn: I agree, SideSynch seems like a great tool, as long as you have a newer (Android 4.4+) Samsung device. I'm still stuck on Android 4.1. And yes, if you are brave enough to root your device, you can go beyond static screenshots and record screen actions as movies.

I'm far from brave enough - that's why I rely on screenshots
