Scrolling pane won't let me insert cursor wher I need it!

Jan 02, 2014

Hi all,

I'm having a frustrating time with the text scrolling pane feature in Storyline. I'm looking to add a slide at the end of my course that has the 'official' list of course objectives (for accreditation review purposes). I will have multiple text hyperlinks that take the reviewer to the portion of the course that covers that objective.

The issue: I have the text appropriately connected to the scrolling pane, but when I am editing and want to add another hyperlink, when I click my cursor into the text area it jumps all the way to the end of the text while selecting everything from that point downward. It won't let me click the cursor in at the point I want.

I am having to use my arrow keys to take the cursor all the way back to the place I want it,  and then select the text to be linked using my keyboard as well.

Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks,

-Tim

Hi Tim,

I've seen a previous thread where a community member mentioned something similar, although I wasn't able to replicate the behavior in my own Storyline files. I'd suggest to first check the following items:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

Additionally, you may want to conduct a repair of Storyline.

If you're still experiencing this behavior, are you able to share a .story file with us that we can test out? You can post it here in the forums or send along to us here.

Ashley,

Thanks - at least one of those issues may be in play here. I work from a network share drive for our project files.

I did notice that the text is a little less prone to this behavior if I am editing it before connecting it to the scrolling pane. It still likes to jump around a bit, but I suppose I can use that as a (pseudo) workaround. Relying on the slide's scroll bar to navigate the text seems a bit less erratic than using the scroll pane's scroll bar.

Thanks,

Hi Tim,

If you're able to work on your local drive (on a new file, as this one may already have the issues associated with it now because of the network drive) and still experience the behavior definitely let us know. I suspect the network drive may be causing some of this odd behavior, so just be sure to save often and keep a back up copy of your Storyline file as well!

Also, I'm not certain how big your overall slide size is, but Storyline also works best when zoomed at 100%.

Ashley,

Thanks - and just a quick follow-up on this...

I've moved the file so that it's local now, but still having the same issue.

  • The path to the file is under 50 characters
  • The slide is set at 100% view (I keep it here)
  • The text area that I'm referring to is probably about 5X the height of the viewable area

This is why it's a bit frustrating, since I have to scroll quite a ways back to the top whenever it jumps to the bottom. I have other modules that will have even more text than this :-(

Thanks - I did try importing to a new project but that results in the same quirky behavior.

My final thought here is that I'll just continue to edit the text area and add links before connecting it to the scrolling pane. And when going back, disconnecting the two before making any changes. This tends to minimize the quirkiness.

But at least this is here for reference when folks come across this behavior (as Rebecca confirmed).

Thanks again,

-Tim
