Seeking guidance on locked and free navigation for different chapters

Dec 11, 2023

We have created a course using Storyline 360, which consists of 5 chapters, 3 of which are compulsory and 2 are elective. The 3 compulsory chapters need to have locked navigation, requiring students to complete each page before moving to the next one. In contrast, the 2 elective chapters allow students to freely click on any page they wish to learn, without locked navigation. Could you please advise on how to set this up in Storyline 360? Thank you.

First, turn off the built-in Menu by deselecting that feature in the Player. (Here's more info: https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-360/articles/storyline-360-choosing-player-features.)

  • Why? The built-in Menu can't be set to restrict only some scenes (chapters).

Instead, use a custom menu that has buttons that link to all the chapters. Use T/F variables to track when the user completes the compulsory chapters.

To track course completion, have a final slide with a "Complete course" trigger. Use conditional triggers to ensure that the user can't get to that slide until they've completed the compulsory scenes.
