Show time elapsed

Jun 19, 2013

I know this issue has been addressed before, but seriously; is there no way to show time elapsed in SL? I used presenter earlier, see screen shot.

I don't get the "difficult to calculate" argument. It's not harder now than when you created Presenter? At least leave the choice to the users? I often use SL purely as a framework for video. If you got a 4 min 24 sec video file, your slide will be 4.24, right? Why make it so difficult? Why remove functionality? I know I can add a playhead to the video itself, but that doesn't really solve the issue when there are several synced elements involved, and it doesn't calculate the total playtime of the video slides.

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just frustrated.

Hi there Sigurd,

I apologize for the frustration. I do agree that this type of feature makes a lot of sense and it would be very helpful for many types of projects. I'm not a developer, however, so I'm afraid I cannot explain why it's not included, other than the information you've already seen and mentioned.

There is a discussion that may help you out with this, though. The initial question was about showing elapsed time for an interaction, but if you keep reading you'll see the question evolved, and if you scroll down you'll see he uploaded a file called Java Script timer function story.

Take a look:

Timing how long an interaction takes

Also, if you haven't already, you may want to share your request directly with our development team.

Thank you!

Is there any update on this???  This question was asked around 3 years ago now.  I'm guessing others have added a feature request for this.

If not, does any one know if there's a way to capture slide duration and the play head time in a flash file that can be embedded on the slide master?  I just want to be able to track time for when someone has to report a problem on a slide.  Just need to know at what time in the slide there's an issue.  I don't need the time to be showing in the skin at all times.

Hi Bob!

I do not have an update to provide on this, but you are welcome to share your thoughts with our product development team here.

In the meantime, I know users are utilizing a progress bar as a visual indicator for learners.

Hi Janet,

Storyline doesn't show a duration or time elapsed based on the non-linear nature of slides and interactivity that you're likely to include. You can figure out a general estimate of the time within the Publishing setting as shown here:

So you'll first click on the three ∙∙∙ next to the title, and then you'll see the project info. Where Storyline is going to calculate the duration based on the slide timelines.

If you're looking to see total time elapsed while a user is going through a course, you may also want to look at enabling a Results slide timer to start with the beginning of the course. You'll need to set a time the course should end though.
