In this case I would not rely on the standard result slide variables and instead create your own number variable, named something like "numTries" or something like that, initially set to 0.
On the slide that would designate the beginning of a try, have a trigger to add 1 to "numTries" either when the timeline begins, or a start button, etc.
On your result slide, just add a new text box with a reference to you "numTries" variable in it.
