SL2 and database access

I would like to pull data from and save data to an online database(MSSQL, MySQL, etc) from within SL2. What is the preferred method for doing this?
I can write ColdFusion(a little old-school, I know) so I can write server side pages to pull from and post data to the database, but I'm not very experienced with Javascript, which seems to be the method currently used to accomplish this. Any suggestions or code samples?
I've found some older threads on this and will use that info, just wondering if there is anything new in regards to SL version 2. Thanks!

Ok, didn't know if SL2 had added any support for this. I'll try to figure it out from the other threads.
