Slider Bar Help! How to pull through results in LMS
Mar 23, 2017
Hi folks :-)
I am building a feedback course and have chosen to use slider bars within this as options (please see attached image). The trouble I am having is how to get it to pull the results of the slider through? I can't actually select the slide to include in my results slide, what am I missing in order to complete this please? :-) I have seen a couple of discussions on here which have some great suggestions but they are quite complex and I wanted to show what I was trying to do first in case there might be a more simplified way!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Olivia

Hi Olivia,
To get your slides to report to the results slide, they need to be one of the built in question slides. When you add controls like sliders to a slide, (even a question slide) they don't have any way to report values to the results slide.
The good news however, is there is a work around. The sliders all store their values in variables. You can use that variable to set the value in a question slide. Either a multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank slide is best for this. Then have that slide's result included in the results slide.
You will need a question slide for each of your sliders. Set triggers to answer the slide question, when the timeline for the slide starts, and another trigger to submit the answer, also when the timeline starts, but after the previous triggers. delay all elements on the slide by a quarter of a second to prevent them from displaying. (This will create a slide that doesn't show.) Set the question to a text value that matches your slider name, if you want to see the text during reporting.
Thank you Dave :-) very much appreciated.
I don't suppose you have an example of what you've mentioned do you please?
If you can post your project, or a setup similar to your project, I'd be happy to setup an example for you.
That would be fantastic, thank you :-) I will post my project for you within this thread. There's only one slide with the sliders on, the rest are all chosen from the pre set survey questions.
Can you post the .story file rather than the published file?
Try this one! :-)
OK, Great, I'll set everything up for you a post back in a few minutes.
Thank you Dave, that's a massive help!
No Problem Olivia,
I've added an additional slide with triggers to make this work for you. This slide runs from triggers only, so is basically a hidden slide, but it will allow you to save the result to your results slide, and report it to your LMS.
Thank you Dave :-) that's perfect. I have another project with another 3 sliders on one slide layer, would I need a separate slide of each one of these and just need to apply the same principle you've shown? How does the slide not show when you run through? :-) (apologies, that probably sounds like a silly question!)
Hi Olivia,
Yes, you can keep your 3 sliders on the page as is, but you will need a question slide for each slider. (One slide per question). You the triggers set select the question answer based on the variable value, as I've shown, and use another trigger to submit the slide results. Make sure that the trigger that submits the slide results is the last trigger in the list.
There are no silly questions, only unasked ones. The slide doesn't show because everything happens when the slide first loads, just as the timeline starts. This takes less of a quarter second to complete. Take a look at the timeline, and you will notice that I've delayed anything from displaying on the timeline until 1/4 second. So what happens is; the slide loads, selects and submits the answer, and navigates to the next slide before anything is ever displayed on the slide. This has the effect of hiding the slide.
Ok, that makes sense, thank you so much for your help, it's invaluable :-) I can see what you've done with the timeline delay now too. My only slight confusion now is how I link all 3 question slides to the one slide with the sliders on?! Ha! :-) Am I getting myself confused? I have attached my project just so you can see what I'm doing ....
Hi Olivia,
No problem, I understand how this can get confusing.
The sliders are numerical, and the numerical value for each slider is stored in a variable. To find out which variable, you can look in the slider properties in the Design tab.
You want to select that value for the trigger condition for for the corresponding slider.
I also moved your sliders to be the top items in you timeline. It is important to put interactive elements, like sliders, at the top of the timeline to ensure that the element can be reached by the click event. If something else is on top of them, you can't click on them.
I've updated your project for you.
You've been so helpful, thank you. Thank you for the explanation also, I can see what you've changed to make it work now :-)
Great! I'm glad that I was able to help, Olivia.
