Stability of Storyline 2 SCORM on Android via Totara LMS

Mar 03, 2016

Hi,

I've been hearing from external eLearning vendors that Storyline SCORM modules on Android are "unstable" and if we wanted to engage them to create an eLearning module using Storyline for us, that they would not recommend this approach but would do so should we sign a waiver excusing them from any responsibility should the module not work.  When quizzed about what they mean by unstable, they haven't been unable to provide any specifics.

I've been using Storyline 2 for a while and I've not had an issue during testing and viewing modules on my Android via our Totara LMS, until yesterday.  Yesterday a staff member notified me of an warning screen that appeared (see attached) when she was part the way through a module.  After a quick chat with my colleague it became evident that she was not in a great mobile service area.  I too replicated this in an area where the reception isn't fantastic, but I can usually make phone calls with no issue.

Has anyone experienced this before?  Can anyone confirm whether this type of error would be due to a bad mobile area?  Does anyone know or have any specifics about the view external companies seems to have about Storyline being unstable on phones?

Thanks, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

That error comes directly from Moodle/Totara (not storyline) - It occurs when the SCORM player on the device sends a message/data back to Moodle/Totara and doesn't receive a valid response within the allowed timeframe - typically this happens when the network connection is interrupted or not reliable.

The Official Moodle Mobile app now allows the SCORM package to be downloaded directly to the device and played offline, syncing user progress when the network becomes available. I don't believe this has been added to the Totara Mobile app yet but I'd guess they will do this at some point soon.
