Sounds like something is amiss with your states and/or any triggers unless you've discovered a bug. More information is needed. If you can't upload your project file, reply with details.
You mentioned links and buttons - so I just wanted to clarify that hyperlinks themselves will behave as normal changing their color based on being clicked - and those colors are based on your theme colors.
If you'd like to share a copy of your .story file as Sandie mentioned, we're also happy to take a look at it.
