Storyline versions

Aug 25, 2022

Hello to all,

I am concerned about Storyline versions. I have been working in a file in version 3.66, and when a different member of the team tried to open it in a previous version installed on his computer (3.62) got the warning (see attachment):

This project won't open because it uses features that aren't available in this version of Storyline. The features in use are:
Video Player Control Themes
Install the latest Storyline update to open this project.

Please note that for this project, we just realized that version 3.62 should be used, because the source file has a a player control for the video that appears at the bottom for version 3.62 and not for 3.66. There is no way to go back with this file once saved in 3.66. If Storyline is going on this path, there should be a warning saying that once saved in a new version, other version won't open. Or a way of going back versions. For this particular thing, we turned off the video controls and we succeded opening the file in a previous version. Please note that we can not do that with each version/each tool, each source. You are updating Storyline almost every week, but projects instead takes a lot of time to be produced. Please note that these kind of version changes do not help at all, usually they end up breaking things that works fine or creating this kind of version problems. I strongly suggest Storyline to only create an update once in a while and not constantly. I must say is the only application that has this kind of non stopping updates.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback regarding how Storyline 360 upgrades project files!

I understand that for compliance reasons, not all organizations are able to install updates as soon as they are released, and having a warning on file compatibility would be a helpful way to prevent files from being upgraded to an inaccessible version.

I’ll be happy to pass your thoughts on to our product team, but you can also feel free to detail them more through a feature request. You can also reach out to our support team here for assistance in downgrading project files to make them compatible with earlier versions of Storyline 360.

Get where you are coming from. But also think you may need internal controls to prevent this happening. Storyline 360 is updated monthly, I suspect most customers would be unhappy if they do not get monthly updates as they are paying a subscription.

It maybe you need to review each version before updating, as Articulate do provide instructions and information on what changes in each version, perhaps it could be made clearer when the use of a new feature changes the opening behaviour.
