Storyline 2 HTML5 output limitations running over Internet Explorer (IE)

Jul 20, 2018

Hello All. I am in the older version still i.e. Storyline 2 :( but i would like to be aware regarding the output in HTML5 which is going to be viewed in Internet Explorer.

I would like to mention two problems I faced and they are as follows:

1. Menu, Glossary, Resources drop down goes missing, we get two vertically inverted arrows, like a scrolling button.

2. Fonts clarity is different compared to swf version of the same output file.

Request you all to please mention the limitations you faced in IE HTML5 output from storyline 2 regarding any type of slides. Also,if someone could suggest any code, file, extension, etc. that may be added to counter the challenge faced.

P.S. : I know Storyline 3 or Articulate 360 is of help, but I am limited with the budget right now.

Hey Phil, I just tried sample output of HTML5 from SL2 over scorm cloud. I had switched off the flash in IE so that html5 could load automatically, compatibility is off right now. Everything worked fine except the issue mentioned in my query. Even reporting in lms was fine.

Then I installed SL3 trial version, created few slides, published and uploaded over scorm cloud, launched and got the result fine (flash still off), compatibility was off.

Then I turned on compatibility for scorm cloud for both output from version of SL2 and SL3. Scorm cloud site went haywire, even though I was able to see launch button, i clicked that, new page loaded without anything just a box for both versions. Attached is an image of the page loaded.

My concern now is that compatibility is creating issue for site. Could you please share any sample through which I could understand your point, or could you guide how you faced that compatibility related issue.

Hey Vaibhav, the compatibility of HTML5 in internet Explorer is a generic issue. Phil's statement about IE Compatibility mode means it will act like an even lower version of IE. This means forcing it back to behave like browser version 7 or 8. Basically from before the time of real HTML5 support. So if that's what is happening in your organization's browser you'll never get it to work properly.

Which version of Internet explorer are you using?

Hello Jeff, I am using IE version 11. Also, client might use the published course in IE version 8 and above.

My main concern is apart from the issue I highlighted in my query I want to be aware of more issue that people might have faced in their courses such as Phil mentioned, so that I may tweak my build to be a bit more compatible for html5 output.

Also, is there any document from Articulate to describe html5 output limitation in IE?
